Winter sports and functionality – the Audi Q3 Vail

  • Compact SUV as a themed vehicle at the auto show in Detroit
  • New, practical solutions and many individual design highlights
  • 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbocharged engine developing 231 kW (314 hp) and 400 Nm (295.02 lb-ft)

Audi is unveiling a themed vehicle of a special kind at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit – the Audi Q3 Vail with an output of 231 kW (314 hp). The compact SUV, which is named after the famous winter sports venue in the United States, unites a powerful presence with a sporty lifestyle. The Q3 Vail is a highlight of the young model series that only launched in 2011.

The Audi Q3 Vail represents a new, potential variation on the SUV concept. The themed vehicle has been designed for young fans of winter sports who love skiing or snowboarding. The Audi Q3 Vail is a sporty and robust compact SUV offering many practical attributes, an elegant appearance and individual design highlights.

The themed vehicle is painted in the color developed specially for it – Energy Red. The red paint contains golden pearlescent particles. The add-on body parts are in matt gray quartz-based paint, and underline the vehicle’s robust and rugged appearance. The high-gloss package, a characteristic feature of the model line, enhances the area around the windows with eye-catching elements in aluminum and high-gloss black.

Vertical struts made from aluminum are integrated in the single-frame grille. They extend across the full height of the grille. In the area of the horizontal panel, which carries the license plate on series-built vehicles, they are pulled outwards to striking effect.

The struts exhibit the bicolor theme that the Audi designers developed for the
Q3 Vail: their lateral edges are painted in matt quartz-based paint, and the slim front faces have a high-gloss finish.

In the headlights the zones in the lower area of the light-guide elements, which generate the daytime running lights, are painted anthracite. The side air inlets further emphasize the themed vehicle’s powerful appearance; their top areas are covered by solid aluminum panels. The underbody guard beneath the front end is also made from aluminum.

Eyecatching features on the sides of the Q3 Vail are the flared wheel arches and running boards, which Audi is to incorporate into the extensive range of Q3 accessories. The restyled aluminum roof rails are specially designed for transporting skis and snowboards – these two items of sports equipment are made from carbon fiber.

The front roof-rail support integrates compact, energy-efficient, wide-angled
LED lights that illuminate the area around the Audi Q3 Vail. They are controlled via buttons in the roof module.

The Audi Q3 Vail is fitted with five-arm wheels in 8.5 J x 20 format. Mirroring the single-frame grille, their visible edges have a high-gloss finish, while the inside areas feature the same matt quartz-based paint. The off-road tires are size 255/45. Track width has increased 40 millimeters (1.57 inches) at the front and rear compared to series-built models, and the body is 30 millimeters (1.18 inches) higher. The themed vehicle also features unique solutions at the back – the two tailpipes of the dual-branch exhaust system are integrated in the diffuser and underbody guard area.

In the interior of the Audi Q3 Vail, three colors offer an ambience of sophistication and sporty elegance – black, gray and red. The headlining is made from titanium gray Alcantara; large parts of the interior, including the carpet, are black. The black, ribbed floor mats are edged with narrow strips of red velvet-finish leather.

An innovative leather/fabric material is used for the upholstery – thin strips of leather just a few tenths of a millimeter wide, are interwoven with yarn. The upholstery features piping with double seams; like the contrasting stitching, the piping is red. Small sections of the upholstery are made from red velvet-finish leather – a hardwearing material that looks similar to nubuck leather at first glance, but in fact has a finer structure. The segments integrated in the door trims are also in red velvet-finish leather, trimmed in steel gray Fine Nappa leather.

The entire instrument panel in the themed vehicle is trimmed in black Fine Nappa leather. Contrasting stitching in titanium gray is an elegant highlight. The leather across the hood of the instrument cluster is steel gray with red contrasting stitching. This color scheme is replicated on the door armrests at the front and rear. The front section of the center tunnel also has a leather trim.

The inlays around the S tronic selector level, at the front of the cockpit and in the doors comprise a three-dimensional stainless steel mesh that requires a complex manufacturing process. The selector lever features a high-gloss black ring and an aluminum badge with a milled “Q3 Vail” signature. The lever gaiter is enhanced by red stitching.

Aluminum takes center stage in the instrument cluster. The most striking elements are the metal dials around the speedometer and rev counter. They were made using a rotary-grinding process. Metal is also used on their rings and around the edges of the control lights. Horizontal bars and small fins give the dials and needle centers a sporty, three-dimensional look. The leather steering wheel features red contrasting stitching and an aluminum trim. Behind it are two large shift paddles for manually controlling the seven-speed S tronic. The footrest and the pedals have thin pads made from rubber. Slits offer a glimpse of the stainless steel beneath the pads.

In some parts of the interior the trims are in high-gloss black – the display and control elements on top of them appear to float. This applies to the area surrounding the driver information system, the zone around the air vents, the periphery of the MMI terminal and the row of switches on the center console. Aluminum inserts give the black switches an air of sophistication. Chrome trims adorn the controls of the air conditioning system; the air vents have black ribs and chrome-trimmed rotary knobs.

The soft keys for the MMI navigation plus system are made from aluminum, while the control terminal benefits visually from narrow strips of the same material. The monitor, which can be folded out manually, has a trim that matches the surface of the instrument panel. The system includes an animation showing the longitudinal and latitudinal tilt angle of the Audi Q3 Vail. In regions that are not included in the map data, the MMI navigation plus system logs the GPS coordinates of the route – for assistance during the return journey.

The interior of the Audi Q3 Vail includes two practical devices for winter sports fans. The side wall of the trunk houses a charging station. It can be used for storing flashlights and charging them inductively at the same time. The same technology is used for the Thermos bottle. It is located in the cup holder between the front seats and is able to chill or warm drinks. Both devices have LEDs that show the current charge level. One attractive extra is that, in addition to LED lighting, the flashlights incorporate an infra-red heating element that can be used for warming your hands or a pair of ski boots.

Another intelligent solution in the themed vehicle is the trunk mat, which has integrated heated seat cushions. The mat can be folded out and laid over the loading lip. This protects the trunk edge while the vehicle is being loaded or unloaded, and also provides a warm area to sit on when putting on or taking off your ski boots. Small LED spotlights on the inside of the tailgate provide light.

The Audi Q3 Vail features a 2.5-liter five-cylinder TFSI engine with direct injection and turbocharging that generates an output of 231 kW (314 hp) and 400 Nm (295.02 lb-ft) of torque from a displacement of 2,480 cc.

The engine’s five cylinders are consecutively numbered; red wrinkled-finish paint has been applied to the cylinder head cover. A panel made from carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) partially covers the engine, and the air filter is also protected against dirt. There is a decorative trim made from plastic around the engine compartment. The acoustic mat on the inside of the engine hood has a “Q3 Vail” logo embroidered in dark gray.

The power of the turbocharged five-cylinder unit is transferred to the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system via a seven-speed S tronic transmission. The
Audi Q3 Vail accelerates from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 5.5 seconds and continues to a top speed of 262 km/h (162.80 mph).

Iconic Audi allroad returns to the U.S. for the 2013 Model Year

  • Audi allroad returns to the U.S. for the first time since 2005
  • Iconic design and functionality blended with segment-leading technology
  • Allroad debuts at North American International Auto Show in Detroit

Making its re-entry into the U.S. market for the first time since 2005, the Audi allroad made its debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The new allroad is built on the A4 platform and has been modified to meet the functionality and design elements that define the iconic allroad.

The new allroad features 211 horsepower with 258 pounds-foot of torque that makes it faster and more fuel efficient than its predecessor.

The exterior features a unique single frame grille design with vertical chrome struts, stainless steel skid plates and side sills, and raised aluminum-optic roof rails. Matte finished lower bumpers and wheel arches are standard, while a full paint finish is optional.

The Audi allroad will replace the A4 Avant starting in the 2013 model year, and will be 0.6 inches wider and 2.3 inches taller with 1.5 inches greater ground clearance. The new allroad is 185.9 inches in length with a wheelbase of 110.4 inches. Compared to its predecessor, the new allroad has a longer wheelbase for ride comfort and more headroom for front passengers. The allroad has 27 cubic feet of cargo space and a spacious 50 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats folded down. Dynamic steering varies the effort as well as the steering ratio at different speeds. Aluminum components of the five-link front suspension and the trapezoidal-link rear suspension provide responsive handling and are optimized to reduce weight. The electromechanical power steering is new in all models of the series and requires no energy for straight-ahead motion, thereby reducing emissions of up to 11g/mile. In addition, it is lighter than the previous hydraulic steering system further improving efficiency through its reduced weight.

Exclusive to Audi, the A4 model also features Audi drive select, a system that adjusts the vehicle’s transmission shift characteristics, throttle response, and dynamic steering. On the S4, the Audi drive select system can also control the adaptive damping suspension and quattro sport differential. Audi drive select offers 27 distinct driving configurations, allowing drivers to configure vehicle drive characteristics exactly to their liking with their choice of Comfort, Auto, Dynamic or Individual settings.

The Audi A4 series has a striking new exterior design with accentuated horizontal lines, arched engine hood, tapered upper corners of the single frame grill, and three-dimensionally highlighted cross ribs and Audi rings. The A4 has redesigned bumpers with angular air inlets, revised grille, and rectangular front fog lights. The allroad quattro is easily recognizable with its flared wheel arches, vertical chrome struts in the grille, and round fog lights. The headlights have also been redesigned both in terms of their exterior shape and the arrangement of the lighting elements. The unmistakable LED daytime running lights have been redesigned and make the A4 instantly recognizable.

The interior of the A4 models has also been refined, with reconfigured climate and infotainment controls, and exclusive wood inlays. The switchgear, steering wheel, and instrument panel have also been enhanced with chrome and high-gloss applications. The result is a further strengthening of the benchmark interior on the A4.

All interior colors – except black – have been re-coordinated and the upholstery range has been revised with Fine Nappa leather. Inlays are now available in Aluminum Trigon, Walnut dark brown, fine grain Ash natural, and layered Oak. The interior of the S line sport package comes in black, refined with high-quality applications. 17-inch wheels are standard on the A4, 18-inch wheels are standard on the S4 and allroad, and 19-inch wheels are optional on all carlines.

The A4 Sedan’s luggage compartment has 17 cubic feet of space, and 34 cubic feet with the seats folded down. The A4 allroad quattro has 28 cubic feet of space and 50 cubic feet with the seats folded down, respectively. An electrically-operated tailgate is available for the allroad.

Audi achieves highest-ever U.S. annual sales eclipsing 101,629 record set in 2010

  • Audi set sales records in each of the first 10 months of this year with a November record expected later this week
  • Sales through the Thanksgiving weekend stood at 102,055 vehicles with more than a month to go in 2011
  • Audi Certified pre-owned sales also set an annual record, beating the mark set in 2008

With just over a month remaining in 2011, Audi of America achieved a new annual sales record over the hectic holiday shopping weekend. With 102,055 sales of premium cars and SUVs already reported this year, the Audi brand eclipsed the previous sales record of 101,629 set at the end of 2010.

Audi also established a new annual record with its Certified pre-owned sales. Audi CPO sales through the end of the Thanksgiving weekend totaled 33,102 vehicles, up 32% from a year earlier. The previous annual sales record for Audi CPO business was 32,108 vehicles sold in 2008.

The record set for new car annual sales marks the second time the Audi brand has topped the 100,000 mark since it established its U.S. business more than 41 years ago. Audi momentum has been evident throughout the year as sales set new records in every month of the year to date. Audi expects to register its 11th record month of 2011 when full November sales totals are reported later this week.

“The Audi momentum story began a few years ago with the restructuring of our U.S. business model and the steady arrival of exciting new models that have captured the imagination of the American premium car customer,” said Johan de Nysschen, President, Audi of America. “Through precarious economic conditions, we have held fast to this plan along with our dealers who have devoted record levels of investments in their franchises.”

“As we head into the fourth quarter, it is clear that consumers are eager to drive the superior lineup of Audi vehicles,” said Audi of America President Johan de Nysschen. “Sales continue to reinforce that Audi holds a desirable position within the high-end sector of the premium car market due to our exceptionally engineered vehicles. All signs continue to point toward 2011 winding up as one of the best years for Audi in the U.S. market.”

The favorable Audi performance in October was bolstered by consumer response to the all-new 2012 Audi A6 and the 2012 Audi A7, the brand’s most technologically advanced models to date.

Audi Best Buddies Challenge: Washington, D.C. Aims for a Record Breaking Year

  • Audi teams up with Best Buddies to raise $1.7 million in total donations benefiting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities
  • More than 1,200 people and celebrity guests to participate, up from 800 last year
  • Audi’s president Johan de Nysschen, serving as the event’s Chairman, announces a renewed three year commitment to the organization

Audi is on a mission to help Best Buddies International raise a record-setting $1.7 million in total donations at the 2011 Audi Best Buddies Challenge: Washington, D.C, a charity walk, run and ride on October 22. Founded by Anthony Kennedy Shriver in 1989, Best Buddies is dedicated to creating opportunities for friendship, employment and leadership training for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

As the largest corporate team – raising close to $140,000 – and Title Sponsor of the Challenge, Audi aims to help Best Buddies exceed last year’s $1.2 million raised. 1,200 participants will race in the Challenge, chaired by Johan de Nysschen, President, Audi of America. Additionally, the company has renewed its partnership with Best Buddies for another three years. During this time, Audi will continue to serve as the Title Sponsor of the D.C. Challenge, provide vehicles as the official car of Best Buddies, and support the launch of a formal job program in the D.C. area.

“I am deeply honored to serve as Honorary Chair of this year’s Audi Best Buddies Challenge: Washington, D.C.,” said de Nysschen. “I am particularly proud of the extended level of connection our company has established with Best Buddies since the inception of the partnership. This year, with close to 150 employees, dealers, partners and their friends and families joining the Audi team, our participation once again reflects this commitment.”

On Saturday, October 22, hundreds of cyclists will take to the starting line at the base of the Washington Monument on the National Mall for a 100K (62-mile) or 20-mile ride through the nation’s capital. The Challenge, which is open to participants of all ages and abilities and is designed to showcase the Best Buddies mission in action, also features the Carl Lewis Challenge, a 5K run/walk chaired and led by the Olympic gold-medalist himself, and the Celebrity-Student Fun Run, a 5K run/walk for high school and college students chaired and led by “Glee’s” Lauren Potter.

Several other celebrities, professional athletes and special guests are also expected to participate in the Challenge, including Honorary Co-Chairs Ted Leonsis, Owner, Washington Capitals, Washington Mystics and Washington Wizards, and his buddy Ken Holden, Buddy Ambassador; American Cycling Legend Bobby Julich; American Olympic Cyclist Bobby Lea and his brother Syd Lea, a Special Olympics Cycling Gold-Medalist; Best Buddies International Founder and Chairman Anthony K. Shriver; Miss Teen USA Danielle Doty, Miss District of Columbia Heather Swann, Miss Teen District of Columbia Imani Bentham, Miss Maryland Allyn Rose, and Miss Teen Maryland Kristen Nicholson; Pop Artist Romero Britto; and Professional Tri-Athlete Omar Nour.

Additionally, US Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM), US Senator Roy Blunt (R-MO), US Senator Richard Burr (R-NC), US Senator Tom R. Harkin (D-IA), US Congressman Gregg Harper (R-MS), US Senator Barbara A. Mikulski (D-MD), US Congressman Jim Moran (D-VA), US Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), US Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi (Democratic Leader), US Senator Jim Risch (R-ID), US Senator Marco A. Rubio (R-FL), and US Senator Mark R. Warner (D-VA) have also graciously agreed to join the Challenge’s Political Ambassador Committee to help promote not only the event, but also inclusion for individuals with IDD.

Since partnering with Best Buddies International in 2007, Audi has helped the organization raise over $44 million in total donations in its primary fundraising events, such as this one. Further, the company has actively engaged employees and dealers on various programs and levels, ranging from employees volunteering to become members of local Best Buddies boards to hiring a Best Buddies Jobs participant to work part-time at Audi‘s Virginia headquarters.

“I can proudly say on behalf of the Audi organization that this partnership has been tremendously rewarding for us, and it is with great excitement that we have announced our renewed partnership with Best Buddies for another three years,” said Johan de Nysschen. “We not only hope to help Best Buddies break its overall fund-raising record this year, but we also hope to inspire other local business to get involved to help us create employment opportunities for individuals with IDD and build a more formal job program in the future.”

This year, activities at the Challenge will also include special “Friendship Races,” where event participants join buddies on tandem bicycles. One of these races will be dedicated to the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver and Sargent Shriver, great philanthropists who truly believed that the human spirit could overcome any obstacles.

“I am extremely grateful that Audi has agreed to be the title sponsor of the Audi Best Buddies Challenge: Washington, D.C., not only for this year, but also for the next three years,” said Anthony K. Shriver, Founder and Chairman, Best Buddies International. “I am also delighted that Johan de Nysschen is Chairing the event, and that Team Audi will have such a strong presence there, both of which illustrate Audi’s company-wide commitment to the Best Buddies mission. But, Audi has truly gone above and beyond in its support for Best Buddies Jobs, as the company has hired a participant with an intellectual disability to work at its headquarters, and is helping to encourage other businesses in the D.C. area to do the same.”

The Challenge, which occurs in October to coincide with the Congress-designated National Disability Employment Awareness Month, will be capped off by a luncheon and private musical performance by Kool & The Gang.

Title and 1-2-3-4-5-6 result for Audi at Valencia

  • With a podium finish Martin Tomczyk celebrates his first DTM title
  • Mattias Ekström remains undefeated at Valencia
  • Filipe Albuquerque with first podium result

Triumph at Valencia: With a 1-2-3-4-5-6 result and an early title win Audi managed to crown its 2011 DTM season. Mattias Ekström celebrated his third victory of the season, Filipe Albuquerque, as the runner-up, his first podium finish and Martin Tomczyk in third place is the new DTM Champion.

Third place was sufficient for Martin Tomczyk to be determined as the early title winner. With a 13-point advantage over his title rival, Bruno Spengler (Mercedes-Benz), the Bavarian managed a special feat: For the first time he won the coveted DTM trophy, for the first time Audi Sport Team Phoenix achieved this with a year-old car, and it has been seven years that an Audi driver was determined as the champion even before the finale. In 2004, Mattias Ekström, who now celebrated overall victory at Valencia, had last secured an early title win. Tomczyk had managed a perfect recovery after having started from position ten on the grid. As early as on lap one he was on position six, and in third place after his second stop.

“I extend warm congratulations to Martin Tomczyk, his team and the entire Audi squad on this outstanding achievement. The fans experience captivating duels at the highest sporting level and in Martin an absolutely deserving champion of the 2011 season,” says Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG. “After the triumph at the Le Mans 24 Hours and numerous other victories this title is already crowning a successful Audi motorsport year now.” His fellow board member Michael Dick, who is responsible for Technical Development, also congratulated the new champion: “’Well done’ to Martin Tomczyk, who has driven an outstanding season and always proved to be a fair and tremendous sportsman both on and off the track. At the same time, the fifth DTM title of the Audi A4 DTM since its debut in the 2004 season is a fantastic farewell gift. The development of our new Audi A5 DTM for the next season is concurrently in full swing. At Audi, we’re working on this car to follow in the successful footsteps of its predecessor with all our passion.”

The driver who definitely dominated the racing action in Spain was Mattias Ekström. The two-time champion led the field on 38 of the 45 laps. After the successes at the Nürburgring and Oschersleben the Swede from Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline celebrated his third race victory within four races. Behind him, Filipe Albuquerque complemented what was a perfect weekend for him. The DTM rookie from Portugal had started from position two, defended his place up to seeing the checkered flag, and thus gave himself and Audi Sport Team Rosberg the best result of the season. He finished 15.847 seconds ahead of Martin Tomczyk.

Subject to an appeal which two Mercedes-Benz teams have filed against the disqualification of their drivers, three other Audi racers finished in the subsequent places at Valencia. Timo Scheider, who managed setting the fastest lap, achieved fourth place in front of his Abt team-mates Miguel Molina and Oliver Jarvis. Mike Rockenfeller took ninth place, Rahel Frey 14th. Edoardo Mortara retired in the pits three laps before the end of the race due to a handling problem.

“This has been a fantastic day for Audi,” said a pleased Dr. Martin Mühlmeier, the Technical Director of Audi Sport. “Six Audi A4 DTM cars on the top six positions, Mattias Ekström has shown another top-class performance, Martin Tomczyk has clinched the title with a tremendous recovery on his own power, and Filipe Albuquerque has achieved his first podium result. We’re overjoyed.”

From the United States Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, who was on location at the ILMC race at Road Atlanta, sent his congratulations as well: “Absolutely well done, I’m tremendously happy for Martin. He has been a member of our Audi family in the DTM for eleven years and has experienced many ups and – no doubt – downs. But he has never lost his spirit and has emerged as a leader, particularly in this season. Now he has rewarded himself and his team for the hard work and the fighting spirit with the title. We’ve always known that Martin is a strong racer and a great guy – now he’s also a true champion.”

Audi wins “red dot: client of the year” award

  • Audi again honored as strongest brand for communication design
  • Nine red dot awards for communication services go to the brand with the four rings
  • red dot initiator Prof. Peter Zec: “Audi combines variety with consistently high design standards”

Audi stands for superb design not just with regard to automobiles: In this year’s prestigious red dot awards, the premium manufacturer won the category “red dot: client of the year” in the area of communication design for the second time in a row. This special cross-sector prize was awarded for the first time last year. The Design Zentrum Nordrhein-Westfalen awards it to the brand whose communication is characterized by particularly outstanding design. And Audi was able to repeat another success from last year: Together with its design agencies, the brand took nine of the prestigious red dot design awards – more than any other company in the contest.

The award as the best client is presented by an international jury of design experts. They were impressed by how Audi implements its particularly wide range of communication services with consistently high design standards: “Audi stands for quality and variety, from the trade fair stand through to installation in the public domain. It works with the most creative minds in the industry while remaining unique and incomparable,” says Prof. Peter Zec, initiator and CEO of red dot.

Further confirmation of Audi’s successful work with strong associates: nine red dot awards, divided between seven commissioned design agencies, for outstanding communication services – from the print campaign to the brand’s appearance at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The particularly prestigious award “red dot: best of the best” went to two exceptional projects. “Qube 3”, a temporary cube-shaped building, translates the characteristics of the new Audi Q3 into a spectacular spatial experience. And for the installation “Outrace”, Audi took eight robotic arms from its production halls and installed them right in the middle of Trafalgar Square in London. Using LED light trails, these robotic arms then wrote messages in the sky which visitors had previously sent via smartphone. “Audi is the progressive premium brand. And in our communication, too, we want to surprise people time and again, in order to create exciting new insights into the four rings – while always remaining unmistakably Audi,” emphasized Lothar Korn, Head of Marketing Communications at AUDI AG.

Audi will receive the prize honoring it as “client of the year” at the “red dot gala” on October 7 in Berlin. The red dot awards for the design agencies who work for Audi will be presented on the same date. All of the winning efforts will then be on display as part of the special exhibition “Design on stage – winners red dot award: communication design 2011” until October 16 at the Alte Münze event location in Berlin. The best of the 6,468 entries in the contest will also be published in the “international yearbook communication design 2011/2012”.

The red dot design award has been presented since 1955 to creative minds all around the globe, and is awarded by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein-Westfalen in the individual disciplines of product design, communication design and design concept. The nominees for the award, which is a renowned seal of quality for outstanding design, come from a wide variety of industries and segments, from furniture manufacturers to research centers. Audi has already impressed the international jury on several occasions since the communication design category was newly established in 1993: In the past ten years alone, 58 red dot awards have gone to the brand with the four rings in this category.
