The New Audi TT: More Attractive, Sportier and More Efficient

Boardwalk Audi TT

After 1998, the Sport Coupe segment was never the same again. The Audi TT was a legend and the design icon right from its debut a market position that has only been improved upon since the introduction of the second generation.

And now in 2011, the product improvement of the new TT is coming and we want to take it to a step further with regard to the exterior, the interior, the power train elements and to the driving experience in general.

When you take a look at the TT from the outside, especially from the front, then you’ll see the new masculine bumper. It makes the vehicle wider, sporty and that’s the first eye catcher. The second eye catcher is the new revised single-frame grille with its black super glossy finish, a very noble, a very stylish element. As an additional option the new TT can be equipped with LED daytime running lights, appearing rather like human eyes in the front end, the exclusive effect. An Audi has an unmistakable face.

Seen from the side, two things become apparent. First of all, the new 17-inch wheel rims with a 5-Spoke V design, then 10-Spoke design, 18-inch wheel rims. New exterior colors are also available.

And the usual unmistakable element, the timeless architecture with its distinctive design. It is impossible to confuse the Audi TT with another automobile. Very important here is the fact that the engine range has been revised as far as efficiency is concerned. The result, up to 14% less CO2 emissions.

Despite the considerable gain in efficiency, the Audi TT engines are still well-conditioned athletes. This is particularly true of the new comer a 2.0 TFSI, its 155 kilowatts or 211 horsepower mean a gain of eight kilowatts compared to its predecessor. And the 350 newton meters of torque are a gain of 70 newton meters. The vehicle objective, driving pleasure, objective achieved.

The Audi TT, like every Audi, sets standards in interiors already today. And since, this is particularly important for our costumers and for the brand, we have sharpened things up here as well.

This is where the stylish glossy back finish comes in and the aluminum look as well. As usual under statement is the TT interior strong statement, premium quality and the sporty appearance are apparent in additional details rendered in an aluminum look. Like for example, the controls for the air conditioning and further details on the steering wheel. The new glossy black is also unassuming and efficiently placed as seen in the casing of the display of the onboard computer on in the interior rings of the air vents. The new Audi TT, even more attractive, sportier and more efficient.

The Audi TT RS: The Purist Driving Machine

The hopes of American sports car enthusiasts will be realized. Audi announced today that it is bringing the 340-horsepower Audi TT RS coupe to the U.S. market by the third quarter of 2011.

The introduction of the Audi TT RS to the U.S. market has been under consideration for several months. To gauge consumer passion for the high-performance car, Audi launched an innovative survey on its Facebook tab. After more than 11,500 fans expressed their enthusiasm for the Audi TT RS in just one month, and the American automotive media praised its dynamics, Audi executives concluded the car’s time had come.

“With performance and agility rooted in Audi motorsports success, the TT RS is truly an emotional sports car,” explained Johan de Nysschen, President, Audi of America. “That emotion became abundantly clear as we explored interest across the country.”

Audi has not yet determined pricing for the Audi TT RS and will continue to define features and options available to U.S. consumers. Only the coupe version of the TT RS will be available in the U.S.

The Audi TT RS headed for America will share key performance attributes of the models sold in Europe and elsewhere. The car will come with the same, award-winning 2.5-liter TFSI, five-cylinder engine that generates 340 horsepower. Along with torque, horsepower is one of the key measures of engine performance. The turbocharged engine also produces an impressive 332 lb-ft of torque. Torque is what causes rotational speed to change. Just as greater net forces cause greater linear accelerations, greater torques cause greater rotational or angular accelerations. It was developed exclusively for the Audi TT RS and won International Engine of the Year honors this summer in judging for its category by 71 automotive journalists. The 2.5T engine will be paired with a six-speed manual transmission and quattro®. Audi’s quattro® permanent all-wheel drive, has had over 25-year-long tradition.  quattro® all-wheel drive to achieve a 0-60 mph time of 4.6 seconds. The lightweight body featuring Audi Space Frame ASF®. Audi Space Frame (ASF®) The Audi A8 is the first North American car with an aluminum body built according to the Audi Space Frame® principle. Audi Space Frame (ASF®) aluminum construction produces a low drag coefficient of 0.32.

The Audi TT RS – At a Glance
Five-cylinder engines are in Audi’s DNA. The company is once again building such an engine – this time a high-performance engine. The Audi TT RS, developed by quattro GmbH, sports a turbocharged 2.5-liter engine with FSI direct gasoline injection under the hood that produces 340 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque, yet consumes only 9.2 liters/25.57 US mpg. In conjunction with quattro permanent all-wheel drive, the powerful five-cylinder model offers explosive performance, making the compact Audi TT RS a purist driving machine.

Potent five-cylinder gasoline engines enjoy a long tradition at Audi, powering cars like the “Ur-quattro” (original quattro) to the head of the pack. Audi has resumed using this recipe. The newly developed engine combines a turbocharger. Turbochargers are the most usual means of forced aspiration used on motor vehicles. Turbocharger with FSI direct gasoline injection to make the TT RS an uncompromising sports car.

The TFSI delivers 340 hp from a displacement. The total volume of air displaced by all the pistons within an engine block. Displacement of 2,480 cc: an output of 137.1 hp per liter. Weighing only 3,197 lb, the Coupe boasts a power-to-weight ratio of only 9.5 lb per hp; the low value made possible by the extremely lightweight body utilizing the Audi Space Frame (ASF). It is made of aluminum up front and steel sheet at the rear.

The TT RS rockets from 0 to 62 mph in 4.6 seconds. The governed top speed of 155 mph is merely the official figure; as an option, it can be increased to 174 mph. Peak torque of 332 lb-ft is available between 1,600 and 5,300 rpm, providing tremendous pulling power. The TT RS Coupe requires only 9.2 liters of fuel per 25.57 US mpg – another example of how Audi combines dynamics and efficiency.

The powerful five-cylinder unit is very compact and particularly lightweight. Its large turbocharger generates up to 1.2 bar of relative boost pressure. At full load, the intercooler reduces the temperature of the compressed air and achieves an efficiency of more than 80 percent. When the driver pushes the standard Sport button on the center tunnel, a flap installed in the left exhaust tailpipe renders the exhaust noise even more intense while making engine response more direct.

A manual six-speed transmission characterized by high efficiency and tightly spaced gears of a sporty nature distributes the tremendous power of the five cylinder engine to the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system, which gives the TT RS enormous traction, superb dynamics and supreme stability.

The innovative mix of materials in the body provides of an exquisitely balanced axle load distribution and outstanding rigidity. Sufficiently high static and dynamic body stiffness are prerequisites for many desirable vehicle characteristics. This rigidity is the basis for the car’s precise handling. The standard sports suspension lowers the body by 10 millimeters. Available as an option is the Audi magnetic ride adaptive damping system, which offers two basic characteristics: Comfort and Sport.

The Audi TT RS rolls on 18-inch tires shod with 245/40 tires. The internally ventilated brake disks measure 370 millimeters in diameter up front and 310 millimeters at the rear. The front friction rings are perforated. They are connected by hollow pins to the aluminum brake disks, which are encircled by black fourpiston brake calipers bearing RS logos. The ESP stabilization system has a Sport mode and can be completely deactivated.

The full potential of the Audi TT RS driving machine is obvious at first glance. The front and rear skirts and the side of the car have been distinctively modified. A stationary rear spoiler is standard, though customers can opt for one which automatically extends and retracts.

The dynamic image of the TT RS carries over into the all-black interior. Standard equipment includes heated sport seats with leather and Alcantara surfaces, brushed aluminum inlays, a flat-bottomed leather multifunction sports steering wheel, a boost pressure indicator, an oil temperature gauge, a lap timer, automatic air conditioning, the concert audio system and xenon plus headlamps with LED daytime running lights.
